Kala or Unicornfish

Kala or Bluespine Unicornfish

These fish are a member of the Surgeonfish family, genus name "Naso". They are so named because of the nub or spike that protrudes from its forhead. The spike can be long, or small bulbous in shape. And as is the case with the Sleek Unicornfish - not visible at all. Kala or Unicorn Fish. Like the Surgeonfish, they have several spikes at the base of their tail used for defense and fending off competitors

The Bluespine Unicornfish is most likely to be spotted by snorkelers. The spikes on its tail are bright blue. The hawaiian name Kala means horn. They are diurnal feeding mostly on brown algae. They are generally greenish grey in color. The males have streamers running from the back of their tail fins.
