Help Us Decide

The MPW needs your vote in choosing a representative fish that embodies the North Shore MLCD and our group, Malama Pupukea-Waimea. A symbol that will help us portray MPW's mission of Education, Conservation, Protection and Aloha of and for our MLCD. We have narrowed it down to two candidates, the Golden Nenue or the Blue Uhu. Both wonderful icons of our Hawaiian waters. Below are the "pros" on each to help you make your choice.....

The Golden Chub

She is actually a variant of the Grey Chub, unique to Hawaii and very rare. For the last 4 years we have had this unique fish swimming in the shallows of Shark's Cove. She is referred to as "The Queen". Because in Hawaiian lore and history when a school of grey nenue had this brightly colored member the whole group became protected by the royal family and it was kapu (forbidden) to catch any of them. Our Cove's queen is quite a character and can be seen swimming around from the shore because of her vibrant yellow color. She would make a perfect "mascot" for the MPW!

The Blue Uhu

There are seven varieties of uhu/parrotfish throughout the Islands. The uhu is the "work horse" of the ocean, a large parrotfish can produce as much as a ton of sand a year. They are also very territorial. An amazing Uhu fact is if there are no males in the area, a young female as she matures can change her sex to a male. Uhu were featured in many Hawaiian legends. One story goes that a fisherman at sea would know what his wife was up to by parrotfish's behavior. For example, two uhu rubbing noses meant that his wife was flirting with another in his absence. The Uhu is an interesting fish and too would make a good mascot.
