Kosta Stamoulis (University of Hawai`i)) - "Fish Spillover from the Pūpūkea-Waimea MLCD: Can a Marine Reserve Improve Fishing?

Kosta Stamoulis is a member of the Hawai'i Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and a graduate student in the Department of Geography at the University of Hawai`i. Previously, he worked with the Hawai`i Division of Aquatic Resources in Kona where he monitored the West Hawai`i network of marine protected areas. His research activities support management of nearshore marine resources and his graduate thesis project investigates fish distribution patterns in and around the Pūpūkea-Waimea MLCD.

Dr. Alan Friedlander (University of Hawai`i) - "Improvements in the P?p?kea-Waimea MLCD Marine Ecosystem Following 8 Years of Expanded Protection"

Dr. Alan Friedlander is the head of the Hawai'iCooperative Fisheries Research Unit and an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Hawai`i. For over 25 years, Dr. Friedlander has been working with communities
throughout Hawai`i, the Indo-Pacific and the Caribbean to incorporate traditional and community-based fisheries management approaches to develop sustainable fisheries and conserve marine resources for future generations.

Dr. Eric Conklin (The Nature Conservancy) - "Acoustic Monitoring in the Pūpūkea-Waimea MLCD Marine Ecosystem"

Dr. Eric Conklin is the Marine Science Advisor for The Nature Conservancy's Hawai'iMarine Program. Eric received his PhD from the University of Hawai'iin Zoology, studying the process of fish herbivory on coral reefs and the effects of introduced algal species on competition between corals and algae in Hawai`i. His work at The Nature Conservancy focuses on developing reef management tools for Hawai'iby identifying the best available science to inform management decisions and developing monitoring programs to measure management effectiveness.

Russell Amimoto (The Nature Conservancy) -"Preliminary Results of Coral Cover Information Collected from the Pūpūkea-Waimea MLCD"

Russell Amimoto is the Marine Monitoring Community Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i. Russell is a captain and crew member aboard the Hokulea and he recently finished the Marine Fellowship Program with The Nature Conservancy. His current position includes marine monitoring around the state, communicating monitoring results back to communities, and working with communities to develop their own marine monitoring programs.

Drew Wheeler (Mālama Pūpūkea-Waimea) - "Community-Based Observations from the Pūpūkea-Waimea MLCD"

Drew Wheeler (aka ScubaDrew) has served as the Observation and Compliance Coordinator for M?mala P?p?kea-Waimea for the last 5 years and has been a scuba instructor and conservation advocate on the North Shore for the past 8 years, with over 2000 dives in the MLCD. In addition, Drew trains and coordinates the volunteers for M?malaDrew Wheeler (aka ScubaDrew) has served as the Observation and Compliance Coordinator for M?mala P?p?kea-Waimea for the last 5 years and has been a scuba instructor and conservation advocate on the North Shore for the past 8 years, with over 2000 dives in the MLCD.
