There are many ways to volunteer with Mālama Pūpūkea-Waimea, and every helping hand makes a meaningful difference. Our dedicated volunteers support the work of MPW—work that, in turn, helps keep the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District healthy, thriving, and full of life.
Whether you're an individual, a family, a group of friends, a school or youth group, a community organization, or even a workplace team, there’s a place for you here. Your time and energy directly strengthen our capacity to protect this special place for generations to come.
What do MPW volunteers do?
Mālama Pūpūkea-Waimea volunteers play a vital role in supporting the work that keeps the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District healthy and abundant. Our volunteers help raise awareness about the MLCD’s fragile marine life and protected status, share knowledge about marine ecology and regulations, and collect important data that informs management and stewardship efforts.
We now offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities to match different interests, skills, and schedules, including:
Native Hawaiian Plant Coastal Restoration Project
Beach Cleanups
Makai Watch / Ocean Education Ambassador Program
Outreach & Education
Human Use Monitoring
Biological Monitoring
To learn more about each of these opportunities, visit the “Our Work” page for details.
In addition, we welcome volunteers with specialized talents, such as media and advertising, photography, videography, graphic design, research, and fundraising. These contributions are incredibly valuable and help amplify our mission far beyond the shoreline.
As part of the MPW ‘ohana, volunteers get to spend time in a beautiful place, learn about this ecologically and culturally significant area, connect with like-minded people, and make a tangible difference for Hawai‘i’s marine life. Whether you're new to conservation or already deeply involved, there’s a meaningful role waiting for you.
